Squirrel mentions nonviolent communication, which is a book and a style of communication I strongly recommend. Even if you don’t buy into the sort of stilted “When you do X I feel Y because I need Z,” I find the basic philosophy of it very helpful in my interactions with other humans. People act and speak based on their needs.

Not mentioned here specifically but shame can play a role in violence and other damaging behaviors…Brené Brown is a great resource on shame, vulnerability, and many other matters.
